A lesson on making good intentions: Teaching children to make intentions

To give our children the opportunity to make a habit of making intentions from an early age is one of the greatest tools we can give them in their spiritual journey to their Lord, Allah most High. Teaching children to make intentions will not only illuminate their worship but teach them to connect to Allah all day long.

This book introduces children to the concept of making intentions and how one might go about making intentions for everyday activities. Mr Owl gathers his friends to tell them all about intentions, while the animals take turns to ask questions about making intentions in this engaging story.

To have intentions for one’s action is of vital importance. The messenger of God(peace and blessing be upon him) informed us in a hadith that:

“Verily actions are only according to intentions.” Al- Hasan has said, “Indeed, nothing other than the intention has caused the dwellers of the Garden to dwell in the Garden eternally, and the dwellers of the Hellfire to dwell in the Hellfire eternally”.

Intentions are the very essence of all actions. It is our intentions that enable our worship and righteous actions to be accepted by Allah. When sincere an intention can illuminate actions and transform the most mundane tasks into righteous deeds. Good intentions connect the believer’s heart to Allah.

Parents should also explore the concept of making intentions further with their children, by asking children to make up their own intentions for various activities.
