Teaching children the meanings of the words in the salah

This children’s picture book has been designed to introduce very young children to the words in the salah, the Islamic prayer. With the aid of pictures, we attempt to begin to describe what the meanings of the Arabic words might be. There are some variations between the words in the salah in different traditions, but we have tried to include the basic integrals which are common, such as the surah fatiha, etc.

This book is only an initial tool to try and get very young children exposed to and engaged with the holy words in the salah. The very short and brief explanations are only a starting point. Parents should expand on the meanings by way of their own explanations, questions, stories and activities to enable children to search further and reflect on the meanings of the words.

It’s important that children’s understanding is not limited just to the images or words in this book, but that they are also encouraged to use their imagination to relate to the words. For example, when explaining the word barakah, the parent can ask the child to imagine what Allah’s barakah looks like for him in his own life? And perhaps to even make a drawing.

There are many pictures in the book to help children to reflect on the meanings of various words. None of the pictures are depictions of any prophet, or member of his household.

The book can be purchased on Amazon.
